Make your own iPhone Duo wallpaper pair

Drop in one photo and crop it twice — once for the 5.4‑inch cover screen at 1398 × 2034, once for the 7.6‑inch inner screen at 1878 × 2670. Your photo stays in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Why one photo needs two crops

A folding phone has two screens of different proportions. The cover display is 1398 × 2034 — a ratio of 1:1.455. The inner display is 1878 × 2670, or 1:1.422. They are close, but not the same, and they also differ in pixel density: 460 ppi on the cover, 430 ppi inside.

Hand iOS a single file and it zooms until the file fits, trimming about 2% off the edges on one of the two screens. On a plain gradient nobody notices. On a photo of a person it is the difference between a portrait framed the way you wanted and one with the top of a head missing.

So this tool gives you two editors, not one. Position each screen separately, then download both. It is the same approach behind the sixteen ready-made pairs on this site.

The two switches, and what they are for

Darken the top. iOS draws the clock, date and status icons over the top sixth of the screen, and it does not put a scrim behind them on the Home Screen. If your photo is bright up there, the white text disappears. The soft setting is usually enough; use strong for a photo that is close to white at the top.

Add grain. Large OLED panels show stepped bands across smooth gradients, worst at low brightness, because 8‑bit colour runs out of steps. Well under one percent of noise removes the banding and is invisible from normal viewing distance. It is on by default and it costs a few kilobytes of file size.

Then put them on the phone

  1. Fold the phone closed. Settings → Wallpaper → Add New Wallpaper → Photos, pick the -cover- file.
  2. Unfold and repeat with the -inner- file.
  3. Do not pinch to zoom in the iOS picker — the file is already the exact pixel size of the screen.

Questions

Does my photo get uploaded anywhere?

No. The cropping happens in your browser with a canvas element. The file never leaves your device, there is no account, no server and no analytics on this tool.

Why does it make two different files?

Because the two screens are not the same shape. The cover display is 1398 × 2034 (ratio 1:1.455) and the inner display is 1878 × 2670 (1:1.422). One file reused on both gets cropped by roughly 2%. The arithmetic is here.

What does “darken the top” do?

It lays a soft black gradient over the top of the image, where iOS draws the clock, date and status icons. A light photo behind white system text is hard to read; this fixes it without touching the rest of the picture.

Why add grain?

Smooth areas of colour show stepped bands on large OLED panels, especially at low brightness. A very small amount of noise breaks the steps up and is invisible at normal viewing distance.

My HEIC photo will not load.

Most browsers outside Safari cannot decode HEIC. Export the photo as JPEG first — on iPhone, Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible saves new photos as JPEG.

Can I use the result however I like?

Yes. It is your photo; we never see it and claim nothing over what you make.
